Three HSers Join Community Youth Concert for Black History Month

community wide youth concert feb 2019

On February 28, three of our high schoolers joined other talented youth in our community from other Dougherty County high schools to participate in the 6th Annual Community-Wide Youth Concert for Black History Month at the Municipal Auditorium in downtown Albany.

Under the direction of high school musical director, Mrs. Christine St. Jacques, freshman Mikyla Porter, and juniors Nancy Johnston & Amber Mullins joined in a variety of old gospel songs and African heritage songs that made for an entertaining and inspiring concert that blessed those in attendance.

Dr. Dougherty stated, “I am so proud of these young ladies and how they represented our school well as a part of this community-wide youth choir. Interacting with students from other schools in the community and singing before a large audience including community leaders was a great experience for them. They are looking forward to participating again next year!”

Varsity Girls Basketball State Runner-Up

girls bb state runner-up 2019

Sherwood Christian Academy Girls Varsity basketball team lost in heart-breaking fashion in the GICAA Division 1-AA state championship in Macon on Saturday night to Covenant Academy 32-26 in overtime.

After a hard-fought game that went back and forth, freshman Joy Kendrick’s potential game winning shot went in and out for the Eagles at the buzzer in regulation that sent the game into overtime. Unfortunately, the Rams from Covenant Academy pulled away in the extra session.

The Lady Eagles were led in scoring by junior guard Ashanti Harrison who scored 14 points. Seniors Caroline Mathis and Anna Kendrick added 6 and 4 points respectively. Junior Alex McComas hit two critical free throws down the stretch that tied the game in regulation.

The Lady Eagles had an incredible run finishing with a record of 18-7. Congratulations to Coach Gary Oxendine, Asst. Coach Vincent Raven, and the entire team for a great season to remember!

IMG_2094Congratulations to Emma Warbington and Mrs. Beth Shepard!

Emma Warbington and Mrs. Beth Shepard were honored today in a STAR Student/Teacher luncheon sponsored by the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce.

The PAGE Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program, now in its 61st year, is sponsored, administered and promoted by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE). Since its creation by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the STAR program has honored nearly 27,000 high school seniors and the teachers they have selected as having had the most influence on their academic achievement. To obtain the 2019 STAR nomination, graduating high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average.

Colonial Times Show & Tell

Early American history came to life in Mrs. Johnson’s fourth grade history class as the students participated in a “Colonial Times Show and Tell.” Students shared clothing, tools, toys, cooking/household utensils, and educational items appropriate to the time period. Through this activity, a much better understanding of the hardships of colonial life was realized by all.

Middle School Banquet

This year’s Middle School Banquet, “Tunes and Treats,” organized and run by the junior class, was like no other. Middle school students were treated to live music by Verse II, a ministry of First Free Will Baptist Church here in Albany. Ken Rice, one of our elementary parents and part of the band, cooked a delicious meal of pasta in marinara sauce with homemade giant meatballs, Italian salad, fresh bread, and brownies with caramel sauce.

After dinner, students participated in games such as foot pasta, junior trivia, and a rock/paper/scissors group challenge. The night ended with a fantastic assortment of door prizes from hats and t-shirts to kayak rentals and gift cards.

The junior class would like to thank all of the parents who supported this event and the businesses who donated the great prizes.

First Elementary Chapel of the New Year

Elementary students enjoyed their first chapel of the year today. Coach Fyock recognized third grade for being the “High Five” winner, and Mrs. Orr presented AR awards. The students and teachers always enjoy “Good News.”

Today was special as we celebrated students who have recently received Christ.  We welcome two new elementary students, Greta and Emmie Runyon.

Pastor Mark Scardino spoke to the students about our position in Christ and how this helps us not to “worry” but learn instead to trust Christ with our daily concerns. Bethany was here to lead us in music. Chapel is always a special time in our week!
