Great Turkey Race

Every year at SCA, students raise money and bring food in for The Lord’s Pantry, all while incorporating friendly competition into the process. Throughout the year, grades compete with each other to earn points for our field day event known as Sherwood Cup. The grade that brings in the most for The Lord’s Pantry receives 500 points (the most we give for one event all year).

Each grade set a goal for the amount of money and food they were going to try to contribute. Students then brought in the food and money over a two-week period before Thanksgiving break.

The middle school’s goal was to collect 1,000 food items and $650. The high school’s goal was to collect $1,470 dollars and 1820 food items. The elementary grades do not participate in the competition but they do bring in food for the Lord’s Pantry.

Thank you to all students for participating and giving to The Lord’s Pantry! You have helped make a difference in the lives of others!

Thank You for Your Service!

On November 11th, Sherwood Christian Academy honored veterans with a special service at Sherwood Baptist Church. To begin the program, Headmaster Dr. Brian Dougherty welcomed all in attendance. The rest of the program was filled with moving speeches from students, a memorable flag folding, singing by the elementary students and One Voice group, as well as an entertaining rendition of USO.

SCA would like to thank all service men and women and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. After this year’s program, we realize just how high a price freedom truly costs. We can’t express how thankful we are for you, Veterans! Thank you for your service!

The Grand Prize of Regional Champions for the State of Georgia

These three received a piece of luggage to use on their all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. in mid-February. There they will compete against 37 other regions in our nation’s Capitol for a chance to win the National Grand Prize of two weeks at Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala. There they will go through astronaut training for two weeks this summer; a prize valued at over $3000 for each of them. In Washington, not only will they compete in the Future City event, but they will visit many museums, go on bus tours of the city, eat in some of the city’s finest restaurants, and possibly get to visit the White House and be honored as some of the nation’s best engineering and scientific thinkers of 2015.

These three students have worked tirelessly on their own time since school started. Since 7th and 8th graders were not required to participate in Future City as a class project this year, it is very admirable that they decided to add this heavy workload to an already full academic schedule. David Orr and Chuck Sancinito mentored the groups this year, providing valuable feedback as Emily, Nathanael, and Andrew worked through possible solutions to growing food items in an urban setting. Kim Sancinito worked with all this year’s Future City teams helping them prepared for their oral presentations, giving suggestions on how to answer any possible questions that the judges might ask.

Let’s congratulate all these students on their hard work this year and especially Team Dorado Province. They have all represented Sherwood Christian Academy well!

Spiritual Emphasis Week

Spiritual Emphasis Week is a great time every semester when we try to give SCA students some time to focus on spiritual growth. This year we were blessed to have Dr. Kurt Wise come and present to our students a case for Biblical, young-age creationism.  Dr. Wise is a biology professor at Truett McConnell College in Cleveland, Georgia.  He is also the director of the Center for Origins Research at Truett.  Dr. Wise is considered one of America’s leading voices in the discussion supporting young-age creationism.

In chapel sessions each day, he brought a tremendous wealth of scientific knowledge to our students to help them in their understanding of this issue.  More importantly, Dr. Wise dug into God’s Word with our students to emphasize to them how critical it is for them to know and have faith in the Bible as the foundation for all of their beliefs on this topic and any other.  Dr. Wise also spent time in some of our Bible classes each day fielding a variety of questions.  He also spoke at Sherwood Baptist Church each evening presenting some scientific creationist theories that seem to be superior to evolutionary theories. It was a great week to dig into God’s Word and discover some of His truths as they pertain to this critical topic of Biblical, young-age creationism.

Thank you Dr. Wise for taking the time to come pour into our students this past week!

I Believe That We Just Won

On Friday, November 21st, the Eagles took on the Calvary Christian Academy Knights for the inaugural GICAA Division 1-AA State Championship title. There was a record crowd in attendance to watch the Eagles play for their first state championship. The Eagles held off the Knights 21-13 in the 4th quarter to take home the trophy.

The team’s record at the end of the season was 11-1. It was an honor to be a part of the inaugural season of the GICAA, a conference where sportsmanship and character rise above competition.

We Are Going To the ‘Ship

The inaugural season of the GICAA has been a great season for the Eagles. With a different schedule from previous seasons, the Eagles walked on to the field of competition not knowing what to expect from their opponents. Barring one loss, the Eagles walked off the field of competition the victors. With a record of 10-1 and for the first time in school history, the Eagles are headed to play for a football state championship on their home field on Friday, Nov. 21.

The excitement will begin with a pep rally on Friday for the team at the upper campus beginning at 11:20 a.m. and lasting until school releases at 12 p.m. Parents are invited to come support their athlete as they get fired up for the game that evening.

Pre-game activities begin at 7:10 p.m. with a spirit line as the boys run out of the locker room. Be there early to show your support for the Eagles! Let’s cheer them on from the beginning.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. when Sherwood takes on Calvary Christian. You won’t want to miss it.

Also, bring a blanket, scarf, jacket, gloves or anything to keep you warm….it’s supposed to be chilly.

But in the off chance you cannot make it to the game, we are live streaming it so you can watch at home! Just click this link and it will take you to the game. http://new.livestream.com/accounts/409174/events/3597237

GICAA State Cross Country Meet

On the cold blustery Saturday morning of November 1, the Sherwood Christian Academy Varsity Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams ran in the GICAA State Cross Country Meet at the Industrial Children’s Home in Macon. The team included a group of seven boys and four girls running a 5K race against teams from Covenant, Westminister, Praise Academy, Central Fellowship and Skipstone.

Samantha Pappas won the girls race while Joshua Kendrick finished fifth and Ryan Canidate finished eighth in the boys race. The guys finished runner-up in state to Covenant Academy and ahead of Westminister, Central Fellowship, and Praise Academy. Great way to finish the season Eagles!!!

Sherwood has two All-State runners, Joshua Kendrick and Samantha Pappas, and almost had three as Ryan Canidate finished in 8th place just one spot short of making the All-State Team. So proud of everyone’s efforts this year, great way to finish the season Eagles!!!

The team was coached by Coach Mark Meager and Coach Lakisha Elder. Thank you both for your efforts and sacrifice to teach these athletes how to compete with excellence while honoring the Lord with their talents.

WALB’s Player of the Week: Chaznic Griffin #11

SCA’s own Chaznic Griffin was selected as WALB’s Player of the Week, the week of October 8th, 2014. We are so proud of Chaz’s many accomplishments on and off the field. It takes a team to make individuals talent shine, so a big congratulations to the entire team for this award! To watch the television spot on Chaz’s award click here. Below is an excerpt from the spot.

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Sherwood Christian’s first season in the GICAA is going swimmingly, and it seems they’ve found a budding star in junior Chaznic Griffin.

Griffin helped the Eagles blow out previously undefeated Thomas Jefferson Academy Friday night, and he did it on both sides of the ball.

SCA lead 27-7 after the first quarter thanks to a pair of Griffin receiving touchdowns.

But he put the exclamation point on the victory in the fourth quarter when he returned an interception 70 yards for a score.

So which way does he prefer to score: offensively or defensively? He says it doesn’t matter.

“The defensive one was more exciting, but they’re both equal to me because they both help the team,” he says.

The Eagles are now 4-1 with the big win, which Griffin credits to a week of working hard in practice.

“We knew we were playing a good team, so we prepared and we executed in practice and that played over to the game,” he says.

Stadium Renovations

If you have been out to the stadium recently, you might have noticed a few changes. The new color is probably the first thing you noticed, followed by the upgraded press box and the re-boarded visitor bleachers. Then you saw the freshly painted concession stand, softball and baseball dugouts, and their respective press boxes. All structures looking good for the new sports seasons this school year. But how did it all happen?

VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers sacrificed their time and clean clothes to improve our school. Over 25 people came out over the summer to give the existing structures a new paint job. One man who went above and beyond was Thomas Broome. In the heat of summer, he pressure washed the entire stadium and other structures, and did A LOT of the painting himself. He might not have wanted any praise, but he is going to get it! Thank you Thomas for all your hard work. It did not go unnoticed, and we are so glad to have you on our team!

The press box structure was in need of an upgrade as well. Mitch Summerell handled the construction of our new press box which includes easy-care vinyl siding, rolling metal doors, ceiling fans and a new roof. Thank you for your work!

Sherwood Recreation also handled re-boarding the visitor bleachers. We are sure the visitors will be happy about that!

We will need more volunteers in the future for other projects. Stay connected by checking in with the Booster Club on how you can help.

Elementary Beam Signing

On August 19, the elementary students were bused to the upper campus to sign a beam that will hang in the new elementary building currently under construction. They were excited to be out at the upper campus to see the construction and be a part of this building process. The variety of signatures and personalities were interesting to see, and boy were they well behaved!

Great job elementary school! We can’t wait until we are all at the same campus next year.
