New Basketball Record Set

colin record.jpg

Congratulations to senior Colin Dougherty who broke the record for career 3-point goals made at SCA! In the 3rd quarter of a tight game with Griffin Christian, Dougherty hit his fourth 3-pointer of the night to set the record of made threes at 148. The previous mark of 147 was set by 2010 graduate Wesley Pittman. The Eagles went on to win a tight game by the score of 63-58. The boys’ varsity team sits at an impressive 12-2 record for the season.

Dougherty, a two-time team captain and three-year starter, has been a prolific outside shooter during his career. He has already matched the most 3-pointers hit in a single game with Patrick Stanford (2013) hitting seven against Central Fellowship Christian Academy last season during the Region Tournament. Dougherty entered his senior year with 105 career threes but has been been hitting them at a steady rate with 43 already this season as the team heads to Christmas break. The coaching staff is confident he will be setting the bar high for 3-pointers made with half of the season yet to be played. Congratulations Colin!

Eagles Sweep Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament

The boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams spent the beginning of their Thanksgiving break competing in the Northside Methodist Academy Thanksgiving Basketball tournament in Dothan, AL. Both teams showed up strong and took first place! Each team had to defeat the home team the Knights of Northside to move to the championship game on Tuesday evening.

The girls’ finished their tournament run taking down pesky Bethlehem High School (FL) 44-38. Eagles Ashanti Harrison, Kyla Raven, and Joy Kendrick were selected to the All-Tournament Team with Joy taking the tournament’s MVP award! The girls’ record is 5-2.

The boys faced a physical team from Escambia County (AL) in the nightcap. Though the Eagles led the entire game, the Cougars closed the gap to one point midway through the 3rd quarter, but a critical 3-pointer by Colin Dougherty pushed the lead back to four and the boys went on to win 57-47. Eagles KJ Brown, Caleb Wiley, and Grant Raven received All-Tournament Awards with Grant receiving the MVP award! The boys are sitting at 7-1 on the young season.

SCA Wins Coveted Athletic Award

girls track state pic

We are proud to announce that Sherwood Athletics was named the 2017-18 GICAA Division I winner of the Athletic Achievement Award. This award is the equivalent of a State Championship for our entire athletic program.
During the year points are awarded for every middle school and varsity region championship, state championship and state runner up. Those points are totaled at the end of the athletic school year, and the Athletic Achievement Award is given to the school with the highest total within each division.
State championships in cross country (Joy Kendrick, individual champion), middle school girls’ basketball, and varsity girls’ track along with state runner-up finishes in boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer helped SCA to this award.
As we remain focused on unity throughout our athletic program, this award is a reminder that although we may play different sports during the year, we are on the same team with a much higher purpose.
“There is ONE body and ONE Spirit, just as you were called to ONE hope at your calling: ONE Lord, ONE faith, ONE baptism, ONE God and Father of all, who is above all and through all and in all.”  – Ephesians 4:4-6
Congratulations to all of our athletes and coaches that participated in Sherwood Athletics during the 2017-18 school year.
