SCA Announces Vickie Davis Memorial Scholarship

Written by: Headmaster Dr. Brian Dougherty

Last month, our school and church family lost a very special friend in Mrs. Vickie Davis. Tragically, Vickie succumbed to the scourge of cancer; but those close to her know the disease did not take away the joy and peace that she found in her relationship with Jesus Christ. Vickie faithfully served not only the body of Christ at Sherwood Baptist Church, but the students of Sherwood Christian Academy for 20 years before retiring in 2015 to tend to her health needs.

Vickie was absolutely sold out to Christian education and always had a heart for students who needed some extra encouragement. She was an engaging teacher who was not afraid to roll up her sleeves and help students experience meaningful, hands-on learning. Mrs. Davis is credited with starting our 7th grade tradition known as Driftwood—an outdoor education field trip to St. Simon’s Island each year. She also took a team of students to the Future City Engineering Competition in Washington D.C. after winning state in the spring of 2014. But what impressed me most about Vickie was how she always drew Christ into the conversation. She understood the essence of a Christian education—that a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is the only way to unlock the heart of a student to help each of them reach their full potential. Vickie was often found praying for her students to this end.

Before her memorial service, I was presented with the idea to honor Vickie with a scholarship fund in her name. I thought this gesture was so fitting. Vickie’s heart was for any student desiring a Christian education to receive one. This special scholarship will be designated to help families who financially need some extra help to make this a reality. A lead donor has come forward to offer a matching gift challenge of $10,000 to help get the fund started. For every dollar that comes in for this worthy cause, it will be matched until the end of the fiscal year. Would you consider joining other donors in making a matching gift to the Vickie Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund to make a Christian education possible for needy students? You can send in your check made out to SCA with Vickie Davis in the memo line to the attention of the Headmaster at Sherwood Christian Academy, 1418 Old Pretoria Road, Albany, GA, 31721. Thank you for your prayerful consideration to honor both the legacy of Mrs. Vickie Davis and to help deserving students receive a Christian education at SCA.

Color Run & Fun Run

by Cameron Higdon, SCA student

This year’s SCA fundraiser was a Fun Run for the elementary school and a Color Run for the middle and high school, both hosted by Boosterthon.

The Fun Run was a great time for both the students and the teachers of the elementary campus. The teachers of each class set goals and devised rewards to motivate their students to raise more donations for the run. These motivational incentives were rewards like: choosing where you sit in class, five minutes of extra recess, and a movie day. The elementary students then ran with all their friends from other classes and grades. The atmosphere was upbeat with music and an announcer giving commands. The announcer would give commands such Slow-Mo run or dancing for a lap instead of running. The students enjoyed being able to go outside and just have fun. Most, if not all, of the students ran more than the minimum 30 laps. It was a new and fun way for the elementary students to finish up the school day.

The Color Run was the fundraiser for the middle school and high school students. The students were asked to bring $50 to be allowed to run. They could also participate in the run if their grade goal was met and the whole grade could run. The Color Run was about a mile through the cross-country course. Throughout this mile the teachers set up at stations with colored chalk. The students then took off down the course only to be met by clouds of color. When they finished the race everyone’s white shirts were covered in an assortment of colors. As Cameron Rambo said, “There was purple chalk over everything and everyone.” The Color Run was a new, exciting and fun way to support our school.

Thank You for Your Service!

On November 11th, Sherwood Christian Academy honored veterans with a special service at Sherwood Baptist Church. To begin the program, Headmaster Dr. Brian Dougherty welcomed all in attendance. The rest of the program was filled with moving speeches from students, a memorable flag folding, singing by the elementary students and One Voice group, as well as an entertaining rendition of USO.

SCA would like to thank all service men and women and those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country. After this year’s program, we realize just how high a price freedom truly costs. We can’t express how thankful we are for you, Veterans! Thank you for your service!

Singin’ In The Rain

The cast of “Singin’ in the Rain” transported crowds back in time to 1950s Hollywood, complete with flashy flapper costumes, detailed props and impressive tap dancing. Not to mention there really was rain!

Each night of the three performances, crowd size was large, with one night exceeding the largest number of attendees the theater has ever held. There was one theme consistent throughout the show – humor for all ages. “Singin’ in the Rain” truly is “one of the greatest musical comedies of all time.”

Thank you for sharing your talents with us, cast! And, congratulations on another successful show!

We Are Going To the ‘Ship

The inaugural season of the GICAA has been a great season for the Eagles. With a different schedule from previous seasons, the Eagles walked on to the field of competition not knowing what to expect from their opponents. Barring one loss, the Eagles walked off the field of competition the victors. With a record of 10-1 and for the first time in school history, the Eagles are headed to play for a football state championship on their home field on Friday, Nov. 21.

The excitement will begin with a pep rally on Friday for the team at the upper campus beginning at 11:20 a.m. and lasting until school releases at 12 p.m. Parents are invited to come support their athlete as they get fired up for the game that evening.

Pre-game activities begin at 7:10 p.m. with a spirit line as the boys run out of the locker room. Be there early to show your support for the Eagles! Let’s cheer them on from the beginning.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. when Sherwood takes on Calvary Christian. You won’t want to miss it.

Also, bring a blanket, scarf, jacket, gloves or anything to keep you warm….it’s supposed to be chilly.

But in the off chance you cannot make it to the game, we are live streaming it so you can watch at home! Just click this link and it will take you to the game. http://new.livestream.com/accounts/409174/events/3597237

Homecoming 2014

If you were at the game last Friday, you could feel the school spirit! From the middle and high school grade floats, to the elementary spirit chain and the alumni attendance, everyone from K5 to graduating classes were out to support the Eagles as they took on Covenant Academy.

The themes of the floats were both creative and hilarious. One even featured a live goat….yeah you heard me right. A great job to all the classes for their creativity and hard work during spirit week. And a special thank you to all the elementary students who came out to the game, helped with the spirit chain and led the team on the field.

Our homecoming court looked OUTSTANDING! All the elected students were honored to represent their classes and made memories that will last a lifetime. Congratulations to Kenney Brown and Leigha Goolsby who were elected Homecoming King and Queen.

We had a great turn out of alumni as well. Over 45 alumni came back to the game to meet up with old friends, see the changes happening at their alma mater and reconnect with teachers whose influence lasted longer than their school years at SCA. The alumni tent highlighted classes celebrating their 20, 15, 10 and 5 year graduations. It was cool to see all the accomplishments of those classes!

And a win 41-6 topped off a great night! Thank you to everyone who made this night a success.

WALB’s Player of the Week: Chaznic Griffin #11

SCA’s own Chaznic Griffin was selected as WALB’s Player of the Week, the week of October 8th, 2014. We are so proud of Chaz’s many accomplishments on and off the field. It takes a team to make individuals talent shine, so a big congratulations to the entire team for this award! To watch the television spot on Chaz’s award click here. Below is an excerpt from the spot.

ALBANY, GA (WALB) –Sherwood Christian’s first season in the GICAA is going swimmingly, and it seems they’ve found a budding star in junior Chaznic Griffin.

Griffin helped the Eagles blow out previously undefeated Thomas Jefferson Academy Friday night, and he did it on both sides of the ball.

SCA lead 27-7 after the first quarter thanks to a pair of Griffin receiving touchdowns.

But he put the exclamation point on the victory in the fourth quarter when he returned an interception 70 yards for a score.

So which way does he prefer to score: offensively or defensively? He says it doesn’t matter.

“The defensive one was more exciting, but they’re both equal to me because they both help the team,” he says.

The Eagles are now 4-1 with the big win, which Griffin credits to a week of working hard in practice.

“We knew we were playing a good team, so we prepared and we executed in practice and that played over to the game,” he says.

Elementary Homecoming Pep Rally

On October 9, the Thursday before Homecoming, the cheerleaders and a few football players put on a pep rally at the Lower Campus for the elementary students. The cheerleaders led the students in several cheers and gave them a preview of the routine they will perform at homecoming. Coach Covington let the students participate in “clap drill” and taught them several chants the football players do in the locker room and on the field. The football players also gave a drill demonstration of going “one-on-one.” The student pick Big Steven ended up being bested by Big Ben 🙂 Coach invited any junior football players to join the team in the locker room at 7:15 the night of the homecoming game, and a select few will even get to lead the team out on the field! After a spirit line, it was back to class for the elementary students and back to the Upper Campus for the cheerleaders and football players. It was a great time to spend together and see all the school spirit through every grade level!

SPIRIT Week

It’s SPIRIT week at SCA and what a fun week it is going to be! Below is the schedule for each day of spirit week. Be sure to check back in with the blog next week to see all the great pictures from Homecoming week.
